Walmart introduced a discounted joint membership combining Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus on Tuesday, according to CBS News, packaging the retailer's two subscription programs into a single annual plan. The bundle costs $120 a year, which the company says saves shoppers roughly $100 compared with purchasing each membership on its own.

The offering arrives as shoppers remain focused on prices. Walmart is positioning the plan as a way to draw cost-conscious customers deeper into its stores and online services.

Why it matters

The bundle puts Walmart more directly into competition for subscription dollars, a space where rivals have spent years building loyalty programs. By tying its warehouse club to its delivery and streaming benefits, Walmart is betting that a single lower-priced membership can hold onto customers who might otherwise trim subscriptions to cope with higher living costs.

The timing reflects that pressure. According to CBS News, the Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% on an annual basis in September, and a recent CBS News poll found that nine in ten Americans name prices as the most important factor in how they view the economy.

What the membership includes

Walmart says the joint plan gives members member-only pricing at Sam's Club, free delivery from both retailers, and a streaming subscription to either Peacock or Paramount+. Paramount+ is owned by Skydance, which also owns CBS News.

The membership also carries a discount of 10 cents per gallon at 17,000 gas stations around the country, along with rewards on qualifying purchases, according to CBS News.

John Furner, Walmart's chief executive, framed the offer around savings and convenience. In a statement, he said the $120 price raises expectations for what a membership can provide, giving customers more money in their pockets and more time to call their own, CBS News reports.

Upgrade paths for current members

Shoppers who already hold one of the memberships are not left out. Walmart+ subscribers can move to the combined plan for an additional $22 a year. Sam's Club members can upgrade to Sam's Club Plus for $60 more annually, a tier that includes Walmart+.

Those upgrade prices give existing customers a path to the bundle without starting over, an approach that could help Walmart convert its current subscriber base rather than relying only on new sign-ups.

Price cuts as a broader strategy

The membership launch fits alongside Walmart's wider effort to compete on cost. In August, Chief Financial Officer John Rainey announced reductions across a range of products, food among them. Rainey said at the time that the company was putting significant money into price because customers need relief and because Walmart believes lower prices translate into market share gains over time, according to CBS News.

That logic extends to the subscription business. A cheaper combined membership can make the annual fee easier to justify for households weighing which services to keep, and it gives Walmart a reason to stay in front of customers across both its main stores and its warehouse clubs.

What to watch

The next signal will be how many existing Walmart+ and Sam's Club members take the upgrade offers, and whether the bundle pulls in new subscribers rather than simply reshuffling the current ones.
