U.S. stocks fell heavily on Thursday, Nov. 5, with all three major indexes closing deep in the red, according to Xinhua.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,833.06 points to end at 51,523.06, a decline of 3.44%. The S&P 500 lost 334.89 points, closing at 7,353.73 for a 4.36% fall. The Nasdaq Composite was the hardest hit, shedding 1,421.52 points to settle at 24,315.00, down 5.52%.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq's steeper loss left it well below the other two benchmarks on the day, while the blue-chip Dow held up comparatively better despite its four-figure point drop.
Coverage of the session from other outlets pointed to a selloff concentrated in semiconductor and AI hardware names, with chip and storage stocks among the biggest decliners. Those reports also linked the move to the outcome of the midterm elections, though Xinhua's account focused on the closing numbers.
The scale of the drop across all three indexes marks one of the sharper single-day declines in recent memory, with losses running from roughly 3.4% on the Dow to more than 5.5% on the Nasdaq.
Investors will be watching whether the selling carries into the next session and whether chip and AI-related shares, which led the downturn, stabilize or extend their losses.
