More than 900,000 candidates began Uganda's Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) on Tuesday, according to Daily Monitor. The exam marks the end of primary schooling for the pupils sitting it.

Daily Monitor also reported that 12.4 million learners dropped out before reaching P7 over the past 30 years, a figure that places this year's candidate pool against a much larger number of children who left school earlier.

Separately, NewVision.co.ug reported that the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) warned against coaching PLE candidates. ChimpReports said UNEB stepped in to rescue 11 pupils who had been left out of PLE registration as the exams got underway.

On security, the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) reported that Military Police were briefed on protecting PLE examination keys and containers.

The exam period now moves into its remaining papers. Watch for UNEB statements on the conduct of the exams and on the cases of the 11 pupils who were registered late.
