Tom Skerritt, the American actor who played Captain Dallas in Ridley Scott's "Alien" and flight instructor Viper in "Top Gun", has died at the age of 92. According to VG, his family said in a statement to People that he died of natural causes on Wednesday, 21 October.

In the statement, the family said that while the world knew him through his remarkable acting career, they knew him for the humour, curiosity, wisdom, generosity and love he brought into their lives.

Why it matters

Skerritt's death closes a career that stretched across more than six decades and more than 150 film and television roles. He worked with some of the most influential directors of the late twentieth century and appeared in several films that became touchstones of popular culture, from Robert Altman's "MASH" to Scott's science fiction landmark "Alien".

His range carried him from war dramas to romantic comedies, from westerns to courtroom television, and he remained a working actor into his eighties. For audiences, he was one of those familiar faces whose name might not always come first but whose roles were instantly recognisable.

From Detroit to a breakthrough with Altman

Skerritt was born in Detroit in 1933. VG reports that he made his film debut in 1962 in the war drama "War Hunt". Steady work followed through the 1960s, but his breakthrough came in 1970 when he played the surgeon Duke Forrest in Robert Altman's "MASH". The film, a dark comedy set in a mobile army surgical hospital during the Korean War, became one of the defining American pictures of its era and established Skerritt as a leading screen presence.

He went on to appear in a wide variety of films, including "The Dead Zone", "Steel Magnolias" and "A River Runs Through It". Those credits show how comfortably he moved between genre pictures, ensemble dramas and prestige adaptations, usually in supporting or co-leading parts that gave a film much of its texture.

Dallas, Viper and an Emmy-winning sheriff

Two roles in particular fixed Skerritt in the memory of younger generations of filmgoers. In Ridley Scott's "Alien" from 1979, he played Captain Dallas, the commander of the commercial starship Nostromo, whose crew encounters a lethal organism. The film became a science fiction classic and launched a franchise that continues to this day.

Seven years later, in 1986, he appeared in "Top Gun" as Mike "Viper" Metcalf, the instructor who mentors Tom Cruise's character Maverick. The role gave him a place in one of the most quoted films of the 1980s.

On television, Skerritt was best known as Sheriff Jimmy Brock in "Picket Fences", which ran from 1992 to 1996. According to VG, the part earned him an Emmy for best lead actor in a drama series in 1993. The show, created by David E. Kelley, mixed small-town drama with legal and medical storylines and won a devoted following during its four-season run.

Skerritt kept working on both film and television well into the 2000s. His final film role was in "Broke" in 2025.

He is survived by his wife, Julie Tokashiki, five children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

For those who grew up with his films, the coming days will likely bring a wave of retrospectives and tributes from co-stars and directors. Watch for remembrances from the casts of "Alien" and "Top Gun", and for renewed attention to "Picket Fences", the series that brought him his industry's highest television honour.
