Sveriges Radio has postponed a press conference that was expected to present David Druid as one of the hosts of this year's Musikhjälpen, according to SVT Nyheter. The broadcaster announced the delay on Monday and did not set a new date. SVT Nyheter reports that the event had been planned for Wednesday, 4 November.
The postponement follows the circulation on social media of video clips in which the radio profile verbally attacks another person. Druid has stepped back from hosting "Morgonpasset" on P3 while the matter is being handled.
In a comment issued through Sveriges Radio's press office, Druid said he is not proud of parts of what he says in the published clips. He noted that filming someone in the middle of a private argument can capture remarks that are genuinely unpleasant.
Druid will also be absent from the "Druid & Zimmerman show" podcast, which airs on Saturday. Sveriges Radio's head of press, Claes Bertilson, told Ekot that the broadcaster is holding internal discussions about what happens next.
Why it matters
Musikhjälpen is one of Swedish public broadcasting's most visible annual productions, and its hosts are announced with considerable attention. A delayed announcement, coming days before the programme's scheduled start, puts a spotlight on how Sveriges Radio handles a presenter whose conduct is under scrutiny.
The case also reaches beyond radio. Druid has recorded a guest appearance on TV4's Christmas calendar programme, which premieres on 1 December. He is one of 24 Swedish celebrities competing in festive games on the show. On Monday morning, TV4's communications department said the episode featuring Druid would be broadcast and that his pause from radio work would not affect his participation.
The broadcaster later qualified that position in a text message to TV4 Nyheterna, saying it is too early to say how the situation will develop.
Broadcaster declines to comment on host speculation
When SVT asked whether the postponed Musikhjälpen press conference was connected to discussions about Druid's role as host, Bertilson replied by text message that the broadcaster never comments on speculation about Musikhjälpen presenters before they are officially announced. He said that policy applies in this case as well.
SVT Nyheter's information that Druid was to be presented on Wednesday has not been confirmed by Sveriges Radio.
The wider Swedish media has picked up several angles on the story. Aftonbladet has reported a lawyer's assessment that the clips could amount to a criminal offence. Svenska Dagbladet's Elsa Westerstad has written that the Druid case raises an uncomfortable question. Resume.se has published crisis experts' views on which measures could determine Druid's future at Sveriges Radio. CYBEV.io has not independently verified those secondary reports and relays them only as accounts published by those outlets.
What Musikhjälpen involves
Musikhjälpen is a Swedish radio and television production in which three well-known presenters are locked inside a glass enclosure in a town square for a week. The programme runs live around the clock on P3 and on SVT and SVT Play. Its purpose is to draw attention to, and raise money for, a neglected catastrophe by engaging listeners and viewers.
This year's edition is scheduled to run from 30 November to 6 December, with the glass enclosure located in Linköping. The theme is mental health in war and crisis.
The format depends heavily on its hosts, who carry hours of live broadcasting across the week. Any change to the presenting lineup would therefore be felt across the entire production, though Sveriges Radio has not said whether a change is being considered.
What to watch
Sveriges Radio has not indicated when the press conference will be rescheduled or when it will say more about the Musikhjälpen hosting lineup. The broadcaster's internal discussions, any further statement from Druid, and TV4's final position on his Christmas calendar appearance are the next points to watch.
