Some iPhone Duo Buyers Report Inner Screens Splitting Along the Hinge on Day One

Some buyers who picked up Apple's new foldable, the iPhone Duo, on its first day of sale say the inner screen has split along the fold line. According to Mashable, photos of affected devices circulating on social media show a long fracture running from the top of the panel to the bottom, directly over the hinge, with a bright white vertical line appearing on the right side of the display where the crack has disturbed the pixels.

The complaints surfaced within hours of the phone reaching customers, turning a launch that had otherwise drawn strong reviews into a day of troubleshooting for a subset of early adopters. Mashable reports that the failures have been logged by users in the United States, Australia and China, suggesting the problem is not confined to a single market or production batch.

Why it matters

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable, a device the company is selling at roughly $2,000, according to the New York Post. A screen that fails on day one is a serious problem for any phone, but it lands harder on a first-generation foldable, where the hinge and the flexible panel are the parts buyers are already watching most closely.

It also undercuts the narrative Apple had been building. Mashable notes that early reviews were largely positive, with critics praising the foldable screen, though they flagged weaker FaceTime camera output, apps that have not yet been tuned for the new form factor, and a crease at the hinge that becomes more pronounced with repeated folding. Those were the expected gripes of a first-generation product. A crack down the middle of the display is a different category of complaint.

What owners are reporting

The pattern described by Mashable is consistent across the photos shared online: a single fracture along the full length of the hinge, paired with the white line on the right of the inner screen. What is causing the failures is not yet known, and there is no public estimate of how many units are affected.

One account illustrates how quickly the problem can appear. A Reddit user in Australia said the display cracked less than six hours after collecting the phone, having folded it fewer than 20 times. That user first called Apple support, where, according to Mashable, the company offered an express replacement but required a hold on the full purchase price of the device and could not promise when the new unit would arrive. The customer instead went to an Apple Store, where staff apologized and swapped the phone for a new one immediately.

That in-store outcome suggests Apple has stock set aside for replacements, at least at some locations. MacRumors, as cited by Mashable, raises the possibility that Apple is gathering the broken units so it can work out what went wrong and correct it in future production runs.

The repair bill without AppleCare+

For anyone whose screen fails outside a warranty or replacement arrangement, the cost is steep. ExtremeTech reports that fixing an iPhone Duo without AppleCare+ runs high, a detail that matters given the price of the handset itself. Buyers who skipped the coverage should check their options before a hinge problem forces the issue.

First-generation risk, again

Launch-day defects are not unusual for a brand-new device category, and Mashable's report frames the cracking as an extreme case rather than a routine bug. Still, the timing is awkward: the same week reviewers were praising the hardware, some customers were photographing broken screens.

Apple has not publicly explained the cause, and the geographic spread of reports means the company will be pressed to say whether the issue is a manufacturing flaw, a design tolerance problem at the hinge, or something else. Until then, current owners have little to go on beyond their warranty and the store counter.

Watch for whether Apple issues a statement or a support program, and whether the number of reported failures grows as more units reach customers in the coming days.
