Francis Duru, the Nigerian actor whose career in Nollywood spanned more than three decades, has died at the age of 57, according to BBC. His family announced the death on his official Instagram account in the early hours of Friday, 23 October.

The family said Duru passed away following a brief illness. In their statement, they asked the public for prayers and understanding, and expressed gratitude for the support shown to them.

"With deep regret, we the family of Francis Duru announce his passing following a brief illness," the family wrote, adding their appreciation for "prayers, love, and understanding" and a wish that his soul rest in peace.

The announcement did not give further details about the illness or where he died.

Why it matters

Duru was one of the recognizable faces of Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry that has grown into one of the world's largest by output. His death comes about a month after the passing of another veteran actor, Olu Jacobs, who died at 84 after years of living with dementia with Lewy bodies — a pairing of losses that has drawn attention to the generation of performers who built the industry's early reputation.

Beyond acting, Duru worked as a director, producer, writer and television personality, and he held leadership roles in industry organizations. That combination — on-screen presence plus behind-the-scenes work — made him part of the professional scaffolding of Nigerian entertainment, not just its public face.

From Cameroon childhood to a Nollywood breakthrough

Francis Ogide Duru was born on 27 July 1969 in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State in southeast Nigeria, per BBC. He grew up in Cameroon before moving to Nigeria for his higher education.

He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, graduating in 1996. That training came after early experience in theatre and television, which the BBC reports helped prepare him for a professional acting career.

His film work began with Missing Mark in 1989. The breakthrough came in 1995 with Rattlesnake, produced by Amaka Igwe, in which Duru played the role of Ahanna. The film helped establish his reputation and opened doors to further opportunities in the industry.

Over the years he appeared in a long list of productions, including Blood Money, Nnenda, The Good Husband, Eagle Wings and Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons.

Awards, guild leadership and a family's loss

In 2020, Duru won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. He had earlier received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace Award in 2007, recognized for his positive influence on young people.

He also served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010 and held other positions within industry bodies — roles the BBC describes as part of his contribution to the development of Nigeria's entertainment sector through professional leadership and mentorship.

Duru was married to Adokiye Duru, and the couple had four children. In August 2024, the family lost their son Ifeanyi at the age of 15. When Duru spoke publicly about that loss in January 2025, he said the experience had deepened his faith in God.

Tributes began circulating after the family's announcement, though the statement itself did not include funeral arrangements.

What to watch: whether the Actors Guild of Nigeria and other industry bodies issue formal statements, and whether the family releases details about memorial services.
