Nigerian actor Francis Duru, whose portrayal of Ahanna in the 1990s film Rattlesnake made him a familiar face in homes across the country, has died at the age of 57. His family announced the death on his verified Instagram page on Friday, October 23, 2026, according to Blueprint Newspapers, stating that he passed away after a short illness. The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) also confirmed the death, Blueprint Newspapers reports.

The family did not say what illness he had. In its announcement, it asked for prayers and for understanding as relatives and loved ones absorb the loss.

Why it matters

Duru belonged to the generation of performers who carried Nigerian home-video productions from a young, uncertain business into a cultural force. When he started out, locally made films were just becoming a regular presence in living rooms; by the time his career matured, Nollywood was a major industry with audiences well beyond Nigeria's borders.

His death removes one of the actors most closely tied to that formative period. For viewers who grew up on 1990s Nigerian films, Rattlesnake and the character of Ahanna remain a shared reference point, and Duru's name stayed attached to that memory for three decades.

His career also reached past acting. He held a leadership position in the guild that represents Nigerian performers, received international recognition for his work with young people, and stayed visible in film long enough to win a major award in 2020.

From Missing Mark to Rattlesnake

Duru's first screen appearance came in 1989 in Missing Mark, a film directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. He entered the industry at a moment when Nigerian video productions were turning into a primary channel for local storytelling, giving performers room to bring Nigerian family life, social pressures and cultural values to audiences nationwide.

His profile rose sharply in the mid-1990s with Rattlesnake, produced by the late Amaka Igwe. Duru played Ahanna, a role that helped make the film one of the titles most associated with the early home-video era. The production is credited with helping launch several careers and with contributing to the growth of what became modern Nollywood.

That role defined him for many viewers, but his filmography went well beyond it. His credits included Blood Money (1997), Upside Down, Home in Exile, Nnenda, Stigma and Mboputa, among others. The spread of projects showed an actor who kept working as production styles, audience tastes and distribution methods changed around him.

Duru trained formally in the craft. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State and earned a bachelor's degree there in 1996, giving his performance work an academic grounding in character development and storytelling.

Recognition, leadership and a personal loss

In 2007, Duru received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award, which recognised his positive influence on young people. Three years later, in 2010, he was appointed interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, placing him inside the professional leadership of the body that represents Nigerian actors.

His acting continued to draw awards late in his career. In 2020, he won Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his work in Mboputa — recognition that came long after the role that first made him widely known.

Profiles of the actor have also linked him to humanitarian and development work, including initiatives on children's education and welfare involving organisations such as UNICEF, USAID, LEAP Africa and COMPASS.

Duru was married to Adokiye Duru, and reports on his personal life indicate the couple had four children. In 2024, the family suffered a major tragedy when his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, died following an illness. Duru mourned him publicly at the time, paying tribute to his courage, and the loss drew sympathy from colleagues across the entertainment industry, including AGN representatives who visited the family to offer condolences.

Tributes have begun to circulate among colleagues, filmmakers and admirers as news of his death spreads. Details of funeral arrangements have not been announced; watch for statements from the family and the Actors Guild of Nigeria.
