Nintendo has opened its first store-within-a-store in North America inside EB Games Canada's flagship location at 267 Yonge St. in downtown Toronto, according to Toronto.com. The 1,500-square-foot retail space opens to the public on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the occasion.
The shop carries exclusive merchandise, Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and playable demo stations, Toronto.com reports. It is the first Nintendo store-in-store concept on the continent.
Why it matters
Nintendo has long sold its products through third-party retailers, but a dedicated branded space inside an existing store is a different approach for the company in this market. The Toronto location puts Nintendo's characters, hardware and software under one roof rather than spreading them across a general electronics aisle.
Jim Tyo, president of EB Games Canada, told Toronto.com that the city's fan base made it a natural fit. He said Toronto has a "really enthusiastic Nintendo crowd" and described bringing the concept to life with Nintendo as incredible, adding that he expects fans to feel immersed and connected with other players.
Susan Pennefather, vice-president and general manager of Nintendo Canada, said the space gives people a way to experience the company's games, characters and worlds in one dedicated environment, according to Toronto.com.
What visitors will find inside
The entrance is marked by Nintendo's signature red branding and a large Mario statue that Toronto.com identifies as a prime photo opportunity. Shelves to the right hold plush characters including Kirby, Pikachu, Luigi and Mario.
Playable demos are a central feature. Shoppers can try titles on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, among them Pokémon Pokopia, Star Fox, Splatoon Raiders and Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave, per Toronto.com.
A software wall displays recent releases, including Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition, 007 First Light, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and Metal Gear Solid 2.
The store also stocks exclusive My Mario official merchandise. That lineup includes a 30-piece Mario and Friends wood block set, along with smaller three-piece sets featuring Mario, Princess Peach, Luigi and Yoshi. Standard items such as Mario Lego sets, collectibles, and Pokémon model kits and figurines are also available.
A Zelda preorder tied to the opening
Franchise fans have one time-sensitive option. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 arrives Nov. 5, timed to a milestone anniversary for the game. Toronto.com reports that people attending the grand opening can preorder it with a limited-edition foil cover, while supplies last.
The reporting comes from Toronto.com, with additional announcements from PR Newswire Canada and Nintendo.
What to watch: whether Nintendo extends the store-in-store format to other North American cities, and how the Toronto location performs through the holiday season.
