Meta's camera-equipped smart glasses will officially go on sale in Indonesia on November 11, 2026, with prices starting at Rp 8 million, according to CNBC Indonesia. The launch brings the Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta lines to Indonesian consumers, but it also raises questions about privacy, since the eyewear can capture video and audio without a phone in hand.

Why it matters

The devices look like ordinary eyewear, which is precisely what makes them appealing — and, according to cybersecurity expert Alfons Tanujaya of Vaksincom, what makes them easy to misuse. Because the glasses resemble a normal accessory, wearers can record their surroundings, including other people, without those people realizing it, he told CNBC Indonesia on Thursday (5/11/2026).

"Hal ini bisa menjadi pelanggaran privasi dan hal ini harus disadari oleh pembeli dan pengguna kacamata Meta ini," Alfons said, warning that this can amount to a privacy violation and that buyers and users need to understand it from the outset. He added that misuse of the recording feature could lead to friction and other problems.

A recording light, but no guarantee

Meta has built a safeguard into the hardware: an LED indicator that lights up while the glasses are recording, intended to signal to people nearby that video is being captured. Alfons cautioned, however, that the light does not fully protect bystanders. A user could cover or disguise the LED, he noted, leaving others unaware they are being filmed.

The glasses do offer practical benefits as well. Alfons acknowledged that wearers can produce content without holding a camera, keeping both hands free during activities — an advantage over shooting with a phone.

What goes on sale, and for how much

The Indonesian launch covers two product families. The Ray-Ban Meta line will arrive as the Gen 3 collection in Wayfarer, Aviator and Zena designs, while Oakley Meta will be offered in the HSTN and Vanguard variants, CNBC Indonesia reports. Pricing starts at Rp 8 million.

Meta is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The Indonesian availability was also reported by Kompas.com, which listed the same November 11 sale date and starting price.

For buyers, the practical takeaway from Alfons is awareness: understand the recording capability before wearing the glasses in public, and respect the people who end up in frame. Watch whether Indonesian regulators or consumer groups respond to the privacy concerns as the devices reach the market.
