Two teachers at Techiman Senior High School in Ghana's Bono East Region have been arrested over the alleged assault of a 17-year-old Form Three student, an incident that drew nationwide attention after video footage circulated online.

The Bono East Regional Police Command confirmed the arrests in a press release dated November 1, 2026, according to Graphic Online. The suspects were taken into custody the same day and are assisting with investigations.

Graphic Online identifies the two as Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe, 37, who teaches English Language, and Ameyaw Adusa, 44, an Information and Communications Technology instructor.

Why it matters

The case has renewed public debate in Ghana over how schools discipline students and whether physical force by teachers should ever be tolerated. The involvement of the Education Ministry, the Ghana Education Service and the police signals that the matter is being treated as more than an internal school issue.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Abas Apaak said the video was passed to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service for urgent investigation on the instructions of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu. In a statement shared on social media, Apaak said the Director-General was also told to make sure appropriate sanctions are imposed on anyone found culpable.

He added that misconduct would not be accepted from any party in the school environment, whether teaching staff, non-teaching staff, students or parents.

What police say happened

According to preliminary police findings, the incident took place on October 23, 2026, at about 4 p.m. on the school premises. The two teachers are alleged to have confronted and assaulted the student.

Police say the confrontation was reportedly prompted by claims that the student had earlier attacked two Form One students.

The matter only came to wide public notice after footage said to show the assault spread on social media. The video appeared to show the two men physically attacking the student, with one of them stepping on his head.

The Bono East Regional Police Command said it is arranging additional medical and psychological support for the victim. It said investigations are continuing and restated its duty to protect students.

School and service response

The Ghana Education Service issued a separate statement on October 31, 2026, saying the school's disciplinary committee had already held an initial hearing. The committee is expected to send its findings to management through the Regional Directorate for further action.

The Service also said the student had been given medical attention and was responding well to treatment.

The Education Ministry had begun looking into the incident before news of the arrests emerged, suggesting the investigation is running on two tracks: the criminal case handled by police and the administrative process run by education authorities.

Both teachers remain in custody as inquiries continue. Watch for the disciplinary committee's findings to reach GES management and for prosecutors to decide whether charges follow.
