TO THE BIBLE – Joshua 1:8
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
The filter from the day before had helped, but Thursday brought a different kind of pressure.
In history class the teacher announced an open discussion on leadership and influence. Students were expected to draw from any sources they found persuasive—philosophy, current events, personal experience. A few classmates immediately leaned into complicated-sounding arguments, clearly trying to impress. One of them glanced toward Maya and Jordan with a faint smirk, as if daring them to bring “church talk” into a serious academic space.
After class Jordan caught up with Maya in the hallway, still turning the moment over.
“I know the Word works,” he said. “We’ve seen it. But there’s this pull to sound more… impressive. Like if I only speak from Scripture, people will write it off as basic. Part of me wants to mix in other things just so it lands better.”
Maya shook her head. “That’s the exact trap. There was a young preacher who tried the same thing—adding philosophy to his sermons so people would think he was learned. An elderly professor who actually knew philosophy told him to stop. The ‘impressive’ parts weren’t impressive at all. He needed to specialise in the Bible instead.”
She stopped near the water fountain and faced him fully. “It doesn’t matter how good we are at school, sports, or anything else. The real specialisation has to be the Word. Meditate on it day and night. Keep it in your mouth. Do what it says. That’s the path to real success—not the kind that only looks smart in the moment, but the kind that holds.”
Jordan leaned against the wall. The residual social tension with Tyler’s circle still existed in the background, quieter than before but not gone. The classroom moment had simply revealed another angle of the same pressure: the temptation to dilute what was actually powerful in order to gain temporary approval.
“So we don’t try to upgrade it,” he said slowly. “We go deeper in it.”
“Exactly,” Maya answered. “Become Word specialists. Memorise it. Let it stay in your mouth. Let it guide the choices even when other voices sound more sophisticated. That’s how the success becomes all-round—academics included.”
They started walking again. No dramatic confrontation followed the class discussion. No new public challenge appeared. Yet both of them felt the assignment settle into place more firmly than before.
The Word would not be a side interest.
It would be the main specialisation.
And everything else would take its place under that.
