FREEDOM’S TRUE PURPOSE

(Serving, Not Indulging)

Sunday, 20 September

TO THE BIBLE – Galatians 5:13

“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

Sunday afternoon felt lighter than the previous weeks, yet not completely settled.

Maya and Jordan sat on the low wall outside the library again. The decision from the day before—to act as if the peace and authority they had spoken were already theirs—had changed something in the way they carried themselves. The old bracing for Tyler’s next move had quieted. Still, the social thread remained unfinished, and both of them sensed that freedom without direction could easily slide backward.

Jordan broke the silence first.

“It’s strange,” he said. “We finally stopped reacting. We stopped asking the same questions over and over. But now that the pressure feels lighter, part of me wonders what we’re supposed to do with the space. It’s easy to think, ‘We’re free from all that tension now—so we can just coast.’”

Maya shook her head slowly. “That’s the exact trap. We’ve been called to liberty, but the Word is clear: don’t use that liberty as an opportunity for the flesh. Freedom isn’t the right to do whatever feels easiest or most comfortable. It’s the ability to serve—in love.”

Jordan looked at her. “Serve how? Tyler still hasn’t said anything. The class is still watching in that half-interested way. What does serving even look like when the conflict isn’t active?”

“It looks like using the freedom we have to build rather than indulge,” Maya answered. “We don’t get a list of religious rules the way people did under the law. That doesn’t mean we get to treat liberty like a free pass. The way freedom grows is by serving one another in love. Doing the things that please the Father. Walking by the Word even when no one is forcing us to.”

She paused, then added, “We’ve spent almost three weeks learning how to stand, speak, and carry the Kingdom. If we use the quiet that follows only for ourselves, we waste the liberty. If we use it to keep serving—quietly, consistently—then the freedom actually expands.”

Jordan was quiet for a while. Across the campus a few students walked past, laughing about weekend plans. The atmosphere no longer felt charged in the same way, yet the unfinished business with Tyler’s circle still sat in the background like an open parenthesis.

Finally he said, “So the next step isn’t waiting to see what they do. It’s choosing to serve anyway. Help where we can. Stay useful. Keep the focus on love instead of on whether the tension fully disappears.”

Maya nodded. “Exactly. Liberty that only serves self eventually shrinks. Liberty that serves others keeps growing.”

They stood and started walking. No dramatic resolution appeared. No sudden message from Tyler arrived. The social undercurrent remained present but no longer dominant.

What had changed was their understanding of the freedom they now carried.

It was never meant for indulgence.

It was meant for service.

And that was how it would keep increasing.
