THE POWER OF A FILTERED MOUTH

(Build Your Life with Your Words)

Wednesday, 2 September

TO THE BIBLE – Matthew 12:36-37

“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Maya still couldn’t believe she had offered Jordan the history notes. Part of her expected him to mock her for it. Instead, he had simply said “thanks” and taken them.

That should have been the end. But the next morning, right before first period, Jordan caught up with her in the hallway.

“Hey… about yesterday. I, uh… I actually used those notes. Helped a lot.” He scratched the back of his neck. “Also… sorry about the juice thing last week. That was dumb.”

Maya blinked. The apology was awkward, but real. Before she could answer, one of Jordan’s friends, Tyler, walked past and muttered loud enough for both of them to hear, “Look at that. Church girl already got him soft.”

Jordan’s face tightened. He opened his mouth, then shut it again.

Later, during group work, the tension returned. Their shared science project (the same one that had been ruined by the juice) was due Friday. Jordan kept muttering under his breath every time something went wrong.

“I’m so finished with this stupid project.”

“We’re never gonna finish on time.”

“I always mess these things up anyway.”

Maya felt the old irritation rising. The words she wanted to throw back were sharp and ready. Maybe if you stopped complaining for five seconds…

She caught herself. The verse from that morning flashed through her mind: *By your words you will be justified… and by your words you will be condemned.

She remembered how many times she had said things like “I’m so done,” “This is impossible,” or “I can’t deal with him.” Even as jokes. Even when she “didn’t mean it.”

So she did something different.

When Jordan muttered “We’re never gonna finish,” Maya looked up and said calmly, “Actually… we will. We still have time, and the notes are solid. Let’s just fix this one section.”

Jordan stared at her for a second, then shrugged. “Okay. Yeah.”

That afternoon, walking home, Maya pulled out her phone. She recorded a short voice note the way the Act section had suggested:

“My words build my life. I speak only what agrees with God’s Word. My future is secure. This project will be excellent. Jordan is not my enemy. Peace is mine. In Jesus’ Name.”

She played it back twice, exactly as instructed.

That night, for the first time in weeks, the urge to complain about Jordan didn’t come. The words she had spoken earlier were still working.

In the realm of the spirit, words never return empty. Whether spoken in frustration or in faith, they produce results. Maya was learning to filter her mouth—on purpose.

ACT
