Lucian Piane, the American music producer and television personality best known for shaping the sound of RuPaul's Drag Race, has died at the age of 46 after a vehicle struck him in Glendale, California, according to The Nightly.
The collision happened early Monday morning. TMZ, cited in the reporting, said Piane was hit by a car, and emergency crews were sent to the intersection of San Fernando Road and Harvard Street at roughly 4.15am after calls came in about a pedestrian being struck.
The Glendale Fire Department told People that firefighters and paramedics gave emergency medical treatment to an adult patient at the scene. The Nightly reports that Piane could not be saved despite those efforts and died in the street from blunt trauma.
Records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner list the death as an accident, according to the reporting. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the collision.
Why it matters
Piane's death removes a figure whose fingerprints are on nearly a decade of one of the most influential music and television franchises of the past twenty years. He worked on RuPaul's Drag Race from its first season through its eighth, serving as composer, producer and a recurring on-air guest judge and mentor.
That run placed him at the centre of a show that carried drag performance into mainstream global entertainment, and his arrangements and original songs became part of the series' identity. World of Wonder, the production company behind the programme, issued a statement paying tribute to him.
"Lucian left behind a legacy of truly beautiful music," the company said, according to the reporting. "May his struggles never dim the memories of a sweet man, a dear friend, and a master musician. Rest in peace, Lucian."
A catalogue built alongside RuPaul
Piane co-wrote and produced a long list of tracks tied to the series, working with host and drag icon RuPaul. Among them were Cover Girl, Sissy That Walk, Jealous of My Boogie, Peanut Butter, Geronimo, Freaky Money, The Beginning, Born Naked, Champion, Sexy Drag Queen, I Bring the Beat, Let the Music Play, Feel Like Dancin and Main Event.
His career reached beyond the show. He received an RIAA Platinum Album Award for his production and music work on the soundtrack to the Hairspray motion picture, and he earned a Grammy nomination. He also built an online following under the name RevoLucian, where he posted satirical techno mixes.
The reporting describes a career that spanned television, film, theatre and digital media, with his largest commercial and creative success coming as a composer, songwriter and music producer.
What to watch
Investigators have not released further details about how the collision occurred, and the police inquiry remains open.
