Bob Dylan met Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, an encounter reported by SVT Nyheter, Yle, Aftonbladet and Göteborgs-Posten and described by Dagens Nyheter as a milestone in the history of rock and religion. According to Aftonbladet, Dylan gave the pope a copy of his autobiography during the visit. Dagens Nyheter's Maria Müllern-Aspegren, who calls herself a follower of both men, writes that the meeting felt like the continuation of a "bromance" between the singer and the pontiff.

The encounter took place at the papal palace, and Göteborgs-Posten devoted part of its 5 November news show to Dylan's unusual choice of clothing for the occasion. In Müllern-Aspegren's telling, Dylan managed the difficult feat of dressing better than a pope, and the two men together resembled the black and white kings stepped off a chessboard.

Why it matters

The meeting carries weight because of what each man represents. Leo XIV is known as the first American to hold the papacy and grew up in a suburb of Chicago, according to Dagens Nyheter. Dylan's birth town is a small place of about 80,000 people in Minnesota — not far away by American standards, the paper notes. Beyond geography, the two share the first name Robert, and the pope is called "Bob" by friends and family, Dagens Nyheter reports.

Müllern-Aspegren frames the visit as the latest step in a long repair of relations between rock music and the church. Dylan belonged to the first generation of musicians whose global fame was so great that religious figures were the only available comparison, she writes. That new secular idol worship challenged the church's standing as a social institution, which helps explain why rock was often branded satanic and why albums were burned, according to her account.

A relationship that warmed over decades

The columnist points to two developments that have softened that old hostility: Christians came to recognize how poorly they made rock music themselves, and rock stars became Christians. Dylan underwent a spiritual awakening and was baptized in the late 1970s, Dagens Nyheter reports. The pope, for his part, revealed himself as a Dylan fan last year when he quoted a long-unreleased and obscure lyric Dylan wrote in 1963, according to the paper.

Müllern-Aspegren also draws a personal parallel. She keeps a poster of the pope next to one of Dylan in her apartment, and writes that she shook as much inside St. Peter's Basilica as she did at Scandinavium when Dylan played there. She imagines the two men spent their time together on the kind of small-town small talk she knows well — comparing schools, old classmates and how each got away — though she admits she is not from the Midwest and leaves that question to the two of them.

Her one complaint is timing: the meeting did not happen before Halloween, which she says would have spared the world a wave of couples dressed as Nathan Fielder and Elizabeth Holmes and given partygoers far better costumes to work with.

Dagens Nyheter published her column on 5 November 2026. Coverage of the visit has so far focused on the meeting itself, the gift of the autobiography and Dylan's outfit; neither the Vatican nor Dylan's representatives have indicated what, if anything, follows from the encounter.
