BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, was closed in October 2026, and a Bloomberg report on the shutdown points to a single decision as the decisive one: Electronic Arts chose to put its weight behind Star Wars Battlefront 3 rather than the next Mass Effect. Gamereactor Norge, which covered the report, says Bloomberg identifies that preference as the primary cause of the studio's collapse.

According to Gamereactor Norge, the report does not place the blame on that choice alone. Several pressures converged on the studio at once, and the Battlefront decision is described as the factor that mattered most among them.

Why it matters

The closure ends a studio that defined the modern western role-playing game for many players, and the reported reasoning says as much about EA's finances as it does about BioWare's output. A dependable shooter series was judged the safer bet over an expensive flagship RPG, per Bloomberg's account as relayed by Gamereactor Norge.

The report also lands at a moment when the industry is watching how large publishers treat their most storied internal teams. If a studio with BioWare's history can be closed on the strength of one portfolio call, the argument goes, smaller teams have reason to pay attention.

A licence offer, a debt load and a cheaper bet

Gamereactor Norge reports that Disney approached EA about the Star Wars licence at roughly the same time the publisher was trying to spend less. That timing matters because of the company's situation: EA had taken on significant debt from an acquisition that handed ownership to the Saudi government and private equity, leaving the company looking for ways to cut costs, according to the report.

In that climate, Bloomberg's account has a predictable shooter franchise winning out over a costly flagship role-playing game. Gamereactor Norge notes that development on Battlefront 3 has reportedly not yet started, and that Respawn and DICE appear to be the studios building it. No release date has been announced for the game.

Mass Effect 5, by contrast, was reportedly in development under the working title Universe, and it was designed around branching timelines generated from the choices players made in earlier entries in the series. That concept, as described by Gamereactor Norge, sounds like the kind of ambitious, expensive project a publisher trimming its budget might hesitate to carry.

An uneven record and a leadership shuffle

Bloomberg's report also weighs BioWare's release history since Mass Effect: Andromeda. Gamereactor Norge describes it as a slide: Anthem made matters worse, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard did not manage to reverse the trend.

Changes in EA's leadership over the summer may have played a part as well, according to the report. David Tinson and Cam Weber were promoted, while Laura Miele, described by Gamereactor Norge as a BioWare advocate, moved from overseeing EA's non-sports studios to a role focused on driving strategic growth beyond EA's core business.

An EA spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company reached the decision to close the studio "collectively" and "after months of planning, review and analysis, including careful consideration of evolving business relationships, industry dynamics and our long-term priorities." Gamereactor Norge quotes that statement in its coverage.

What to watch next: whether Battlefront 3 moves into production at Respawn and DICE, and whether any part of the Mass Effect concept survives elsewhere at EA.
