BioWare was shut down in October 2026, ending the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age. According to a Bloomberg report on the closure cited by Gamereactor Norge, one decision stands above the rest in explaining why: Electronic Arts opted to back Star Wars Battlefront 3 instead of the next Mass Effect. Bloomberg describes that preference as the leading factor in the studio's demise.

The report, published on Sunday, November 1, 2026, also lists other forces that pushed the studio toward its end. Battlefront 3 has no release date, and according to the report its development has not yet begun.

Why it matters

BioWare's closure removes one of the most storied names in role-playing games from the industry. The studio built Mass Effect and Dragon Age into major franchises, and its shutdown closes a chapter that stretches back decades. For players, the Bloomberg account suggests the outcome was not simply a matter of a studio running out of ideas or talent, but of a publisher weighing a costly flagship RPG against a safer, more predictable shooter and choosing the latter.

The report also offers a window into how EA is allocating its resources after a period of financial pressure, and into the internal calculations that can decide which projects — and which studios — survive.

A license offer, a debt load, and a safer bet

According to Bloomberg, Disney approached EA with the Star Wars license at roughly the same time the company was trying to spend less. That pressure followed a debt-heavy acquisition that placed the company under the ownership of the Saudi government and private equity, leaving it focused on cutting costs, Gamereactor Norge reports.

In that climate, a dependable shooter franchise won out over an expensive flagship role-playing game. Bloomberg's account frames the choice as a straightforward comparison of risk: Battlefront, a known quantity tied to a globally recognized property, against a narrative-driven RPG carrying the weight of a beloved series.

The contrast in the two projects' status is stark. Mass Effect 5 was reportedly in development under the working title Universe, and it was to feature alternative timelines generated from the choices players made in earlier games in the series. Battlefront 3, by contrast, has not entered development, with Respawn and DICE apparently set to build it.

A run of uneven releases and a leadership shuffle

Bloomberg also points to BioWare's inconsistent release record since Mass Effect: Andromeda. The report describes a slide that Anthem made worse and that Dragon Age: The Veilguard did not manage to halt.

Leadership changes at EA over the summer may have played a part as well. David Tinson and Cam Weber were promoted, according to the report, while Laura Miele — described as a BioWare advocate — moved from overseeing EA's non-sports studios to a role focused on driving strategic growth beyond EA's core business, as Bloomberg characterizes it.

An EA spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company reached the decision to close the studio "collectively" and "after months of planning, review and analysis, including careful consideration of evolving business relationships, industry dynamics and our long-term priorities."

What to watch next: whether Battlefront 3 moves into production under Respawn and DICE, and whether any of the Mass Effect 5 work under the Universe title surfaces in another form.
