Apple introduced a new iPad mini on October 26, 2026, bringing an 8.5-inch OLED display, an A20 Pro chip and a slimmer, lighter body to its smallest tablet, according to TIMES Indonesia. The company positions the device for people who want substantial computing power in a format that is easy to carry, from creative professionals to gamers, the outlet reported.
The announcement marks one of the larger overhauls of the iPad mini line in recent years, touching the screen, the processor, the chassis and connectivity at once.
Why it matters
The iPad mini has long occupied an unusual spot in Apple's lineup: smaller than the standard iPad and iPad Air, but priced and specified above the entry-level model. This refresh pushes the miniature tablet closer to the company's premium devices, with display and silicon changes that were previously reserved for larger or more expensive hardware.
For buyers, the combination of an OLED panel and a 2-nanometer chip in a device weighing roughly a quarter of a kilogram could make the mini a more credible alternative to a full-size tablet for reading, note-taking, gaming and on-location creative work. TIMES Indonesia notes that Apple framed the launch around users who need a capable tablet in a portable size.
The move also signals where Apple's component plans are heading. A 2nm processor appearing in a compact, comparatively niche product suggests the company intends to spread its newest silicon across the range rather than hold it back for flagship models.
Display, design and durability
The headline change is the screen. The new iPad mini carries an 8.5-inch OLED panel, a step up from the LCD technology used on earlier generations. According to TIMES Indonesia, Apple also offers a nano-texture glass option on certain storage configurations, a treatment intended to cut down on reflections.
Despite the larger display, the tablet measures just 5.4 millimeters thick. The Wi-Fi model weighs 255 grams, while the Wi-Fi plus Cellular version comes in at 263 grams. Apple is selling the device in two finishes: midnight and starlight.
Durability is another addition. The tablet carries an IP67 rating for resistance to water and dust. TIMES Indonesia reports that, based on laboratory testing, the device can withstand submersion in fresh water at a depth of up to one meter for a maximum of 30 minutes. That protection is not permanent and can diminish with wear over time, the outlet noted.
A20 Pro chip, iPadOS 27 and AI features
Inside, the iPad mini runs an A20 Pro chip built on a 2-nanometer manufacturing process. TIMES Indonesia reports the processor includes a CPU with up to six cores and a seven-core GPU equipped with Neural Accelerators, hardware intended to speed up artificial intelligence workloads.
The tablet ships with iPadOS 27, which supports the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. According to TIMES Indonesia, these features are designed to help users locate information, answer questions and interpret context displayed on the screen.
On the communications side, the front camera is a 12-megapixel unit with Center Stage, which keeps the user within the frame during video calls. The device also supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and, on certain models, 5G cellular connections. Apple is additionally introducing an Acoustic Display audio system, which TIMES Indonesia says is meant to improve sound when watching video or playing games.
Availability
Apple opened pre-orders on October 28, 2026, with the device scheduled to reach customers starting November 6 in the markets the company has announced. TIMES Indonesia did not report pricing.
