Apple released iOS 27.2 for iPhone and iPad on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, bringing broader language coverage and memory features to Siri AI, new tools for the foldable iPhone Duo, and a large set of security patches, according to TechCrunch. The update also reaches older devices through backported fixes, including a correction for a flaw Apple says may have been used against specific individuals.
Why it matters
The release puts Apple's assistant in front of more non-English speakers while pushing it toward the kind of persistent memory that rivals at OpenAI, Anthropic and Google have been building into their products. TechCrunch notes that remembering a user's preferences and past choices has become a central competitive battleground for AI assistant developers, and Siri's new recall abilities place Apple in that same race.
The security side carries its own weight. Apple's release documentation lists more than 160 fixes in iOS 27.2, and 9to5Mac reported that the company addressed at least 329 distinct vulnerabilities across all of the system updates it shipped the same day.
Siri AI expands into five more languages
Siri AI now works in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, all in beta, TechCrunch reports. Apple announced the added languages separately, saying the assistant is available in more languages as of today.
Alongside the language expansion, Apple says the assistant can retain details from earlier conversations and use them when responding later. Siri can also draw on material beyond its own answers, including photos sent in Messages, people listed on calendar events, voicemail, Safari history and reading lists, according to TechCrunch. Users can choose which apps Siri AI is not allowed to pull from.
New features for the iPhone Duo and FaceTime
The foldable iPhone Duo has drawn complaints from some early buyers over display issues, but iOS 27.2 adds functionality to the device anyway. Apple Pencil now works with the foldable inside apps such as Notes and Preview, and a new Edge Light effect brightens a user's face during video calls, per TechCrunch.
FaceTime gains two additions. Dual Capture lets a caller stream from the front and rear cameras at the same time during a group call, and participants can bring in a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner.
Messages, Photos, Podcasts and sports
The update introduces suggestions that turn a message into a reminder item or a calendar event. In Shared Albums, users can now edit captions and leave comments, and the app will remind them when a folder is nearing its expiry date, TechCrunch reports.
Apple also reworked the Podcast app so it surfaces new episodes from shows a user follows together with episodes they are partway through.
For sports viewers, Multiview arrives on iPhone, allowing up to four live streams at once through Apple TV. TechCrunch lists Major League Soccer, Formula 1 in the U.S., and Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders during the MLB season among the supported content, with multiple F1 feeds available during a broadcast.
Security fixes reach back to iOS 18
Most of the patches in iOS 27.2 were also backported so that people still on iOS 26 receive them, according to TechCrunch. One specific fix went further back, to iOS 18, which Apple first shipped in 2024.
Apple said that flaw may have been exploited in what it described as an extremely sophisticated attack against particular targeted individuals running versions of iOS earlier than iOS 27. TechCrunch notes that Apple routinely uses this wording when a phone has been compromised by government spyware or a forensic tool used by law enforcement, and that the company did not say who was behind the exploitation.
Apple has not published further detail on the affected individuals or the nature of the attack. Users who have not yet installed the update can do so through the standard software update settings on their devices.
