Ahmet Nazif Zorlu, the chairman of Zorlu Holding, has died at the age of 82, the company announced on its social media accounts. According to Sözcü Gazetesi, he passed away on the evening of 2 November at a hospital in Istanbul where he had been undergoing treatment.

The newspaper reports that Zorlu had been receiving cancer treatment for some time and was moved into intensive care on Saturday. In its statement, the company said it was in deep sorrow over the loss of its chairman, whom it described as having been treated at the hospital for a period before his death.

Why it matters

Zorlu's death closes a chapter for one of Turkey's most prominent family-run conglomerates. Over roughly five decades he built a textile trading business into a group whose name is attached to household brands and to investments spanning several industries, and the holding company he led is counted among the major players in Turkish business. His passing also puts attention on how the group's leadership will be structured going forward.

From a Denizli workshop to a national group

Zorlu was born in 1944 in Babadağ, a district of Denizli province in western Turkey, according to Sözcü Gazetesi. He entered business through his family's activities in the textile sector and was involved in trade from a young age.

He opened his first textile shop in Trabzon, on the Black Sea coast, and in 1970 relocated the company's headquarters to Istanbul. There, together with his elder brother Zeki Zorlu, he laid the foundations of what became Zorlu Holding.

In 1976 he founded Korteks, expanding the family's investments into manufacturing. In 1990 the various companies were brought together under the Zorlu Holding umbrella. Four years later, in 1994, the group took Vestel into its structure, marking its entry into the electronics and white goods sectors.

A portfolio across sectors

Under Ahmet Nazif Zorlu's leadership, the group grew into a business operating in fields including textiles, electronics, white goods, energy, real estate, metallurgy and the defence industry, Sözcü Gazetesi reports. Vestel and Korteks stand out among its best-known companies and brands.

The group operates in international markets as well as in Turkey, and its investments across different sectors have placed it among the significant organisations in the business world.

What to watch next is how Zorlu Holding communicates its succession plans and whether the group's structure or strategy changes following the loss of the chairman who shaped it.
