Most of what you've been told about spiritual growth is flat-out wrong. We've been sold this idea that faith matures in mountaintop moments — the retreat high, the tearful altar call, the worship night that wrecked you. But I've found the opposite is true. Real faith grows in the boring, the dry, and the seasons you'd swear God forgot your address.
I've been walking with Jesus for over two decades, and I can tell you the years I felt most distant were often the years I grew the most. It's a strange paradox, and nobody warns you about it.
So if you're in a wilderness season wondering if anything is happening in your soul, this one's for you. Here are seven signs your faith is growing — even when it doesn't feel like it.

1. You're Still Showing Up (Even When You Don't Feel Like It)
Let's be honest — the easiest thing in the world is to skip church when your heart isn't in it. Nobody would blame you. Life is exhausting.
But here's what most people miss: faithfulness isn't a feeling, it's a decision. If you're still dragging yourself to church, still opening your Bible even when the words feel like cardboard, still praying those awkward two-sentence prayers — that's not weakness. That's discipline. That's growth.
The people who grow the most aren't the ones who feel the most. They're the ones who stay when the feelings leave.
2. Your Questions Are Getting Deeper, Not Shallower
When I was a new believer, my questions were simple: Is God real? Does He love me? Now my questions are harder: Why does God allow suffering? How do I love people I disagree with? What does faithfulness look like in a culture that mocks it?
Some people think asking hard questions is a sign of doubt. I think it's a sign of spiritual maturity. A child asks why about everything. So does a growing adult — just about bigger things.
If your faith questions have evolved, congratulations. You're not losing your faith. You're deepening it.

3. You Notice Sin You Used to Ignore
This one stings, but it's the real deal.
When you first come to faith, you're aware of the big sins — the obvious ones. But as you grow, the Holy Spirit starts shining light into corners you didn't know existed. Impatience. Pride masked as confidence. Gossip dressed up as "sharing concerns." Selfishness you'd never have named before.
Does that feel like regression? It's not. It's the opposite.
The closer you get to a light, the more dust you see. Growth means you're noticing things you used to shrug off. That's conviction, not condemnation — and it's a sign something's alive in you.
4. You Care About People You Used to Judge
I remember a season when I had very strong opinions about everyone else's choices. I was the unofficial judge of Christian behavior — and I was exhausted.
Then something shifted. Not overnight. But gradually, I started seeing people instead of categories. The coworker whose lifestyle I disagreed with became a person I genuinely cared about. The family member who hurt me became someone I could pray for without bitterness.
That shift — from judgment to compassion — is one of the clearest signs of spiritual growth. You can't manufacture it. It's a work of the Spirit. If it's happening in you, pay attention. That's not you becoming "soft." That's you becoming more like Jesus.

5. Obedience Gets Easier (and Harder at the Same Time)
Here's a weird truth: as your faith grows, obedience gets both easier and harder.
Easier because you've tasted and seen that God is good. You trust Him more. Saying yes doesn't require the same internal wrestling it used to.
Harder because He asks for more. The things He once let slide, He now calls you to surrender. The areas you thought were off-limits? He's knocking on those doors now.
If God is asking more of you than He used to, that's not punishment. That's promotion. He trusts you with more because you've proven faithful with less.
6. You've Stopped Needing Everyone to Agree With You
There's a phase in every believer's life where you need constant validation. You need your pastor to confirm your decisions. You need your friends to approve your choices. You need everyone to clap.
Growing faith moves past that.
You start making decisions based on what God has spoken to you — not what the crowd would endorse. You can hold convictions without needing to win arguments. You can be misunderstood and still sleep at night.
That kind of quiet confidence doesn't come from arrogance. It comes from knowing Whose you are.
7. You're More Aware of Grace Than Ever
The final and most telling sign: you've stopped keeping score.
You're less impressed with your own goodness and more stunned by God's. You don't brag about your prayer life. You don't compare your spiritual résumé to your neighbor's. You just find yourself whispering thank you more often than you used to.
That's not low self-esteem. That's the gospel landing in your bones.
When you know how much you've been forgiven, you stop performing. You stop pretending. You start resting. And that — more than any mountaintop moment — is what real faith growth looks like.

The Truth Nobody Tells You About Spiritual Growth
Here's the thing about faith: it rarely feels like growth while it's happening. It feels like waiting. Like silence. Like showing up when nothing's changing.
But years from now, you'll look back and see it. The slow, invisible, unglamorous work of God in your ordinary faithfulness. The dry seasons that actually rooted you deeper. The questions that expanded your soul. The obedience that cost you something.
If you're still here, still seeking, still showing up — you're growing. Whether it feels like it or not.
So here's my challenge for you this week: instead of chasing a spiritual high, do one small faithful thing. Pray the awkward prayer. Open the Word even if it feels dry. Text the friend you've been meaning to encourage. Faithfulness in the small things is where God does His biggest work.
And if you're in a wilderness right now — tell me in the comments. What's one sign of growth you've noticed in yourself lately? You might be surprised how much it encourages someone else walking the same road.
