The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has paraded a suspended commandant of its Niger State command alongside officers in connection with the deaths of suspected illegal miners, according to Channels Television.

The parade follows the deaths of 37 suspects who died while in Nigerian custody, the BBC reported. The suspects had been arrested over illegal mining in Niger State.

Coverage of the incident has drawn reactions from several quarters. TheCable published photographs showing teenagers and adult workers returning to the site where the 37 deceased miners were arrested by the NSCDC.

Civil society organisations have rejected calls for the removal of the NSCDC's head over the deaths, according to The Guardian Nigeria News. A separate report by Legit News, published in Hausa, said a group had asked that the question of dismissing the NSCDC leader over the deaths of the Niger youths be set aside.

The material available does not specify the cause of the deaths, the date of the arrests, or the identities of the suspended commandant and officers.

What to watch next: whether the NSCDC releases further details on the circumstances of the deaths and the status of its internal inquiry.
