South Korea Delays Parliamentary Report on US Investment Deal to Sept 22 as Opposition Warns of 'Historic Blame'

South Korea has pushed back its National Assembly report on a major US investment package to September 22, Yonhap Infomax reported on Thursday. The delay comes as negotiations between Washington and Seoul remain unresolved, with opposition lawmakers warning that any deal harming the national interest would leave those responsible "sinners in history," according to Yonhap Infomax.

Several sticking points remain open. Seoul Economic Daily reported that Westinghouse's objections have caused last-minute friction over the US investment plan, with the two sides divided on South Korea's participation in management. Asia Today reported that Washington rejected a proposed 15 percent equity stake and a board seat, and instead countered with a proposal for additional nuclear plant construction. JTBC reported that South Korea has pushed back against what it described as the US disregarding a memorandum of understanding, insisting that 15 percent is a different matter.

The Dong-A Ilbo reported a further dispute over Alaska LNG: the US side says the plan explicitly calls for investment in the project, while South Korea says it is exploring the possibility. The disagreements span equity, governance and energy projects, leaving the package's terms unsettled ahead of the rescheduled briefing.

Lawmakers are expected to press the government on the terms when the report is delivered on September 22. Whether Seoul and Washington can narrow their differences before that date remains the key question.
